As if you'd care, here are my Picks & Pans:

PICKS:

The Human Story, by James C. Davis. A wonderfully engrossing synthesis of history.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, by Mark Haddon. This is one of the best novels I've read in years.

A Short History of Nearly Everything, Bill Bryson's thorough yet hilarious account of the history of science.

Positively Fifth Street, James McManus's true-life account of his unlikely run at the 2000 World Series of Poker.
Disgrace, the Booker prize winning novel by J.M. Coetzee.

Anil's Ghost, the latest novel by Michael Ondaatje, author of The English Patient.
Everything by the late, great Joseph Heller, especially Catch-22.

PANS:
The short-sighted "War On Terror" that threatens the lawful freedoms that are the bedrock of America.
Insurance companies.
Religions.
Purists of any kind.
